TIM TOMASIK APPOINTED TO ILLINOIS JUDICIAL CONFERENCE COVID-19 TASK FORCE
The Illinois Judicial Conference (IJC) recently commissioned a task force to address the ongoing challenges with resuming court operations through the next phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Court Operations During COVID-19 Task Force is charged with analyzing and making recommendations regarding the continuing challenges for the administration of justice resultant from the pandemic. A vetting process was undertaken to identify the most qualified individuals to serve with this multidisciplinary group. TKK partner and co-founder Tim Tomasik was selected and approved to serve on the task force by the Illinois Supreme Court.
The Task Force will first consider three subject areas, among other matters: (1) how technology might appropriately be used for jury selection and trials; (2) use of remote proceedings in civil and criminal cases (particularly with regard to assurances of due process); and (3) logistics of maintaining safety for court personnel, litigants and the public.
Other matters to be considered include prioritizing the backlog of cases continued during the pandemic, handling failures to appear because of technology issues, and Illinois Supreme Court rule amendments/policies that would further support court responses to this public health crisis. Recommendations will be expeditiously vetted by the IJC and then forwarded to the Illinois Supreme Court for consideration.
